A test and drain valve is a device that allows both testing and draining of a fire sprinkler system. It consists of a single handle ball valve with three working positions: test, off, and drain. It also has a test orifice that simulates the flow of a sprinkler head, a sight glass that shows the water flow, and a port for system access.

A test and drain valve is used to perform two important functions for a fire sprinkler system: a main drain test and a water flow test. A main drain test checks the water supply pressure and flow rate of the system. A water flow test checks the operation of the alarm devices and the flow switch.

To perform a main drain test, the following steps are needed1:

Notify the local fire department if the system is connected to a central alarm.
Locate the original and previous yearโ€™s main drain test data.
Close the alarm control valves to prevent signalling a water flow alarm.
Record the static pressure indicated on the supply gauge.
Slowly open the main drain valve to the fully open position.
Record the residual pressure indicated on the supply gauge.
Compare the results with the previous data and check for any significant changes.
Close the main drain valve and reopen the alarm control valves.
Record the date and time of the test and any observations.

To perform a water flow test, the following steps are needed:

Notify the local fire department if the system is connected to a central alarm.
Locate the test and drain valve on each floor or zone of the system.
Turn the handle of the valve to the test position.
Observe the water flow through the sight glass and check for any leaks or obstructions.
Wait for the water flow alarm to activate within 90 seconds.
Verify that the alarm panel indicates the correct floor or zone of the water flow.
Turn off the water flow by returning the handle of the valve to the off position.
Repeat the process for each test and drain valve in the system.
Record the date and time of the test and any observations.
A test and drain valve is a useful and convenient device for fire sprinkler contractors, as it simplifies the installation and maintenance of the system by reducing the number of components and valves needed. It also ensures compliance with NFPA standards for testing and draining of fire sprinkler systems.
